What Haircut to Choose

What Haircut to Choose

Cynthia Buruca |

It's important to give your hairstyle serious thought because it can improve your confidence - but picking the proper cut can be challenging. The hottest hair trends are yours to choose; but, they could either look amazing on you or they may not. Before choosing your next appearance, consider the following three factors:

How much work do you want to put into maintenance?
How dense is your hair?
What haircut would best suit your face shape?

Once you're able to answer these three questions, you'll surely be able to find the right haircut for yourself!

HAIR TYPE
An important thing to consider when getting the perfect hairstyle is your hair type and texture. Whether your hair is thin, thick, curly, coiled, wavy, or straight, hair type and texture have a huge say on the outcome of your hairstyle. It's important to keep in mind that some hair types aren't able to achieve the same outcome as others, or, it might take a helluvalot of maintenance and styling to achieve your desired look. For instance, if your hair is quite thin, shorter hairstyles - like buzz cuts and crew cuts - would be better so that the thin patches wouldn't stand out as much compared to the longer hair styles. Curlier hair, on the other hand, generally need more maintenance than straight hair, so certain hairstyles could either discourage or highlight those curls.

 FACE SHAPE

Your face shape is also an important factor when choosing the right haircut because your haircut and style can highlight or hide certain facial features. For instance, we recommend that square shaped faces get neat haircuts that are longer on the top and shorter on the sides to help emphasize the jawline. And oblong or rectangular faces, on the other hand, would need hairstyle that voids volume - especially on top - so it won't elongate the face any further.

Here, we’ve collected 7 different hairstyles for the guys who have Round, Oval, Square, Oblong/Rectangular, Triangular, and Heart shaped faces and recommended haircuts for each from low to medium maintenance.

ROUND FACE

With a round face, you need to create the illusion of height and angles. Any type of hair style that gives volume. Best strategy would be to keep the sides short, like a fade, your crown longer and have a square line up. You can also experiment with messy v cut styles, side parts or layers for contrast. Avoid buzz cuts and bangs!

Low Maintenance: Comb over, spiky hair

Medium maintenance: Side parts,

High Maintenance: Pompadour, Faux cut, Quiff hairstyle

OVAL FACE

An oval face is symmetrical and balanced, so no need to do anything extra to get the greatest haircut. Any hair cut works! Try to avoid any type of style that makes you wear your hair down on your forehead known as bangs, as it will make your face look rounder.

SQUARE FACE

Square shaped faces give a masculine and angular look. Goes well with hairstyles that feature short, and tight sides. You can also add some volume and layers on top to give you a chiseled look.

High maintenance: Quiff cut, French cut

Low maintenance: Buzz cut, crew cut

OBLONG/ RECTANGLE FACE

If you have a rectangular or oblong face shape, you will realize that you will have a longer face than a wide face. Best thing to do is to balance its length. Should not be too long on the top and not too short on the sides. Texture haircut with a medium top and sides works best. Avoid having the combinations of long hair cuts and long beards.

Low maintenance: Buzz cut, crew cut

Medium maintenance: Slick back, side parts,

High maintenance: French cut

TRIANGLE FACE

Triangle face shape is asymmetrical, with a wider jawline and a smaller forehead to balance the triangle face shape.Try to add volume on the top to reduce the pointy look. Longer and fuller with short sides the better. Looks great with textures. Try to avoid short side fades.

Low maintenance: crew cut

Medium maintenance: Fringe

High maintenance: French cut, faux cut, Short pompadour

HEART SHAPE FACE

Heart shaped face mens forehead is the widest part of their face, its necessary to avoid aggressive fades and too high crowns. Try to experiment with longer tops, back and sides to let it naturally grow. This is also great for the guy with smaller heads.

Low maintenance: crew cut

Medium maintenance: Shaggy styles, messy tops

High maintenance: Long fringe

It is important understand that the purpose of going by face shape is to help emphasize or understate certain features to balance out your face. Just because you have a certain face shape, doesn't mean you're confined to styles that exaggerate certain features. Feel free to experiment with different hair styles until you find the one you're happiest with! Remember, you can always modify classic styles to help tailor them to you specifically!

Communication with your barber is also important! Your barber is the best person to discuss hair style with because you'd get a personalized recommendation. They're the experts! Everyone's hair and head shape is different, so don't get discouraged when you walk into your barber's with a reference photo and they can't get the exact same cut as the photo. After looking at your reference and discussing the style you want to achieve, your barber will - at least - achieve something similar, something as close as possible to the style but with your hair type.
