Men & Women's Skin

Cynthia Buruca |

In general, we all have unique skin: from dry, to oily, to a combination, to normal. But we never stopped to think - do men and women's skin act the same? Here are reasons why men and women's skin aren't precisely the same.
THICKNESS
Collagen is a protein that is produced by all of our bodies and helps to keep our skin strong and tight. Collagen metabolizes slowly when we're young, and we create enough new collagen to keep up. However, collagen production decreases as we age. As a result, our skin becomes thinner, it begins to sag, and becomes more prone to wrinkles.
According to  dermatologists, on average, male skin is 20% to 25% thicker than female skin. Female skin tend to have a tighter, firmer look and includes more collagen. Male skin collagen content decreases at a steady rate, whereas female skin gets affected later in life, usually after menopause. Female skin thins more dramatically than male skin, and the effects are more noticeable. This is why wrinkles appear differently in men and women. Men have fewer and deeper lines than women.

BIGGER PORES
Pores are the tiny holes in your skin that look like dots. If you look attentively in the mirror, you may see them. Pores are necessary because they allow sweat and oil to escape your body. Pores on men are typically larger and more visible than on women.
MORE OIL
The natural oil on your skin, known as sebum, is made to moisturize and protect your skin from bacteria. However, too much oil can be harmful. Acne is caused by sebum clogging your pores. Men have more oil glands - or sebaceous glands - than women, which causes them to have more acne.
HIGHER RISK OF IRRITATION
Irritation produced by shaving is a problem that women do not necessarily have to deal with. Shaving causes the skin to become irritated and stressed, removing the outer layer of skin cells. Using a dull razor is the worst thing you can do to your skin, and using the same razor for an extended period of time might lead to the formation of bacteria (which we do not want on our faces).

There are anatomical distinctions between men's and women's skin, in addition to facial hair. The stimulation of androgen (testosterone) promotes an increase in skin thickness, which explains why a man's skin is about 25% thicker than a woman's. The texture of a man's skin is rougher, in addition to being thicker.
