How to trim your beard neck line

How to trim your beard neck line

Cynthia Buruca |

Before you begin, consider the following: Are you hoping to have a better jawline when you go out? Are you attempting to make your neck appear longer? Or perhaps your goal is to trim a beard that you've allowed to grow out. Your barber can help you determine your personal style, but you should rise to the task of maintaining it at home all the time. Keep in mind: the more scruffy and patchy your beard is, the more attention gets drawn away from the rest of your face.
Let's get in shape - and I'm not referring to working out - I'm referring to discovering and defining your beard border.

TOOLS
You have two options before beginning to shave your neck.
You can finish your shave with a razor or straight razor after using a trimmer to achieve a flawless shave, such as our Wahl Peanut Trimmer, or you can just use a trimmer all the way. In the event that you choose to use a razor, you should exfoliate your face with a product like Neal's Yard Face Scrub and use a shaving cream like Taylor's Old Bond Street Shaving Cream.

PRE SHAVE
The best time to shave is right after getting out of the shower. The shower will soften your hair, but make sure to wash your neck with cold water
to force your pores to seal and prevent razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

SHAVING YOUR NECK
When trimming your beard neckline, there is guidelines to help out. Be careful, do not go over the line shown above. This could end up ruining your whole look, forcing your to shave off part of your beard and spoil months of careful growing and styling. Here are the steps to have a nice border:

Step 1: Know where to stop. Look straight in the mirror, while holding your head upright and straight. The first guide starts at the bottom of your ear lobe, follow the line all the way down to where it meets your neck.
Step 2: How much to remove from neck. Place your pointer finger and middle finger over your Adams apple. Anything below should be removed.
Step 3: Trim. Start from where you want your beard line to be, trimming downward. Start from the middle making your way to each side. When done, trim upwards from the middle to the side. When shaping your beard try not to make it too round or circular. This will make your head look like a ball. Opt for a straight cut to give yourself a more square shape, or you can put in a gentle curve. Having a photo reference helps a lot.
Step 4: Finishing touch.  Once you are happy with your shape, you can give yourself a crisper line with a razor. Always finish with a beard oil for your hair, and a moisturizer on your neck  & cheeks
Giving yourself the right beard line on your neck can do a lot for your appearance. If you are hesitant to do this alone, pay a visit to your barber. They can give you a shape to follow when you go home. Be sure to maintain the shape your barber gives you at home every 2-3 days so you don't lose it! Remember to go back to your barber once every 2 weeks so they can create the lines again, giving you a fresh guide.
Giving yourself a line at home is absolutely possible, but letting your barber give you guide is easier. Letting a professional tailor the line to your hair growth and facial structure is a sure-fire way to look your best!
